Usyk’s win takes him to 23-0 with 14 knockouts and extends one of the all-time best careers, which includes Olympic gold and undisputed champion at cruiserweight.

“He’s a great fighter, it’s a great performance,” Usyk, 37, said of Fury, who was unbeaten in 35 fights until he lost their four-belt unification bout in May.

“Unbelievable 24 rounds for my career.”

Tyson Fury’s tactics were sound and his performance impressive. The attempt to dominate the centre of the ring and push Oleksandr Usyk back with his jab ultimately failed, however. The champion from Ukraine used his superior pace and skill to round Fury’s attack and defense

Path for Usyk and Fury unclear

It will be interesting to see what Fury does next after that devastating blow. There are a lot of big money fights out there for him, but he hardly needs the money and this defeat will hurt.

The Boxing Writers Association of America on Monday released the results of its annual awards naming the best fighter, fight, trainer and manager of 2024, as well as several supporting honors.

Lineal, unified and de facto undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, who defeated Tyson Fury twice in 2024, was named the BWAA Sugar Ray Robinson Fighter of the Year.

Usyk was also involved in what may be the BWAA’s other most prestigious award, the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier Fight of the Year, which went to his first meeting with Fury. Usyk battled and defeated Fury over 12 rounds on May 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Eddie Futch Trainer of the Year award went to Robert Garcia, who runs his eponymous boxing academy in Oxnard, California. In 2024, Garcia guided emerging pound-for-pound junior bantamweight star Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez and new junior middleweight interim titleholder Vergil Ortiz Jnr, among others, while helping construct the perfect game plan for Jose Valenzuela to upset Isaac Cruz in August.

Egis Klimas was named the BWAA’s Cus D’Amato Manager of the Year. Klimas manages Usyk and Vasiliy Lomachenko, who bounced back from a 2023 defeat to Devin Haney with a win over George Kambosos Jnr to win a lightweight title last May in Kambosos’ native Australia.

Additional BWAA 2024 awards winners include Bruce Silverglade (Good Guy); Marv Albert (Broadcast); Brad Goodman (Meritorious Service); Prichard Colon (Courage in Overcoming Adversity).

As 2025 unfolds, the boxing world is bracing for a year that could reshape multiple divisions and redefine legacies.

One of the biggest events on the calendar is set for Feb. 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where “The Last Crescendo” will bring together some of the sport’s most dangerous fighters. The card, featuring seven championship bouts, is headlined by Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol in a long-awaited rematch for the undisputed light-heavyweight title.

Daniel Dubois will also put his IBF heavyweight crown on the line against Joseph Parker, a fight that could have massive implications depending on what happens next with Oleksandr Usyk.

With a supercharged start to the year, the following four storylines will define the months ahead.

Oleksandr Usyk to retire?

At 38, Usyk remains at the pinnacle of the heavyweight division, having unified the WBO, WBA and WBC titles with his second victory over Tyson Fury.

However, retirement rumors continue to swirl, particularly with talks of a potential farewell bout against fellow Ukrainian legend Wladimir Klitschko. Usyk’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk, has suggested that such a historic matchup could serve as the perfect conclusion to his career.

If Usyk does decide to step away, the heavyweight division could undergo a seismic shift. Dubois, currently preparing for his February 22 clash with Parker, would find himself in prime position to seize control of the division. However, should Usyk remain active, a rematch between the two could be inevitable—assuming Dubois gets past Parker first.

Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury: Will it finally happen?

The “Battle of Britain” between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury has been teased for years, yet it remains elusive. Fury’s recent announcement that he is retiring—yet again—has cast fresh doubt over the fight. Promoter Eddie Hearn, however, believes Fury’s claim is a tactical move and is still pushing for a showdown later in the year.

Joshua, meanwhile, is weighing his options for his next fight. If Fury walks away for good, AJ may have to pursue alternative routes to reclaiming the heavyweight throne. But if Fury decides to return, the long-awaited clash could finally become a reality—possibly by summer.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford: A superfight in the making?

Alvarez and Crawford are reportedly finalizing a deal for a blockbuster fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend in Las Vegas. The bout would see Crawford, undefeated in 41 fights and already a two-weight undisputed champion, move up two weight classes to challenge Canelo at super middleweight.

Despite the size difference, Crawford’s team remains confident. Trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre believes his fighter’s superior ring IQ and adaptability will make him a real threat to Alvarez. If the fight is finalized, it would be one of the most intriguing stylistic matchups of the year.

Before a potential showdown with Crawford, Alvarez is expected to take another fight in May, as is tradition. His longtime trainer and manager, Eddy Reynoso, has identified IBF super middleweight champion William Scull and top-ranked contender Christian Mbilli as the frontrunners for that bout.

Wladimir Klitschko to come out of retirement?

At nearly 49 years old, former heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko is rumored to be contemplating a return to the ring. If he follows through, he could attempt to surpass George Foreman as the oldest heavyweight champion in history.

The biggest potential fight on the table for Klitschko is undoubtedly a showdown with Usyk, creating an all-Ukrainian clash between the country’s most celebrated boxing icons. However, Klitschko has also emphasized his commitment to Ukraine amid the ongoing war, making his return to boxing anything but certain.

The big man from Morecambe is a two-time world heavyweight champion with statement wins over Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder. He fell short for the first time in his professional career in May of 2024, battling Usyk for the undisputed title.

In the rematch, the Ukrainian put three of the four major belts on the line after vacating the IBF. He retained them with a unanimous decision, one which Fury branded a ‘robbery.’

Oleksandr Usyk's Team Finally Reacts To Tyson Fury's Shock Retirement After Claiming He Was Robbed - Seconds Out

Less than a month later, ‘The Gypsy King’ would announce he was to hang up the gloves, ending with a phrase highlighting daylight robbery.

“Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing, it has been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it and I’m going to end with this; Dick Turpin wore a mask.”

Speaking to TalkSPORT, Usyk’s longtime promoter Alex Krassyuk joked that it was the ‘seventh’ time the Brit had announced his retirement.

“I thought it was the seventh time. That was my personal calculation.”

Krassyuk went on to praise Fury and said that he believes fans will see him step through the ropes once more.

“It’s 50/50. He did sound serious, but I can’t be sure he’s out of the ring forever. That’s my personal opinion, my hunch, my feeling. I still can see him fighting. It can be anything, like money, something interesting.

“He’s a champion. He’s strong. He’s well loved and respected in the world of boxing. Why should he quit? I think after six, seven months, he will have a rest and he will probably change his mind.”
